Keynote speaker Peter Clarke, CEO of Man Group PLC, set out to dispel what he considers to be myths surrounding hedge funds at the London School of Economics’ Alternative Investments Conference.
Mr Clarke stressed that hedge funds are not unregulated in most parts of the world and they are about to become regulated in the US.
On the topic of liquidity, Mr Clarke said hedge funds “can sit anywhere on the spectrum from very liquid to highly illiquid.” He added that hedge funds these days were not terribly highly leveraged and that they have matured as an asset class.
During a talk on ‘Institutional risk and Due Diligence’, One speaker stressed that risk mitigation is certainly a priority these days. “If we don’t like what we see, we don’t invest. We have veto rights. In light of what happened in 2008 people like me have a more high profile role. We look at the stability of firms and individuals.”
